The Erie Canal once carried the freight that built America. Today the towpaths that ran alongside it make for some of the best cycling in the Northeast — 360 miles from Buffalo to Albany through small towns and some bigger, working locks, taking in the landscape at the right pace from the bicycle seats.
We rode around fifty miles a day, mostly on quiet paths, with time to look around and chat with locals and fellow travelers..
These are some of my photographs from that trip.
